Sampling and process control systems for coal/biomass fired power plants

Before Combustion

We have equipped many power plants with sampling systems, which takes a representative sample of the raw coal or biomass before it is transported to the boiler. The raw coal or biomass is blown in transport pipes, from the mill to the boiler. In the transport pipes, the gas velocity is measures with the DAP (Dirty Air Pitot) and the flow of coal or biomass is measured with a PFS (Pulverized Fuel Sampler).The mentioned instruments are inserted into the material stream through a DC (Dustless Connection), which is mounted on the side of the circular transport tubes.

The instruments come in various versions along with a range of tools.

After Combustion

The fly ash is analyzed for residual coal; this gives an indication on how well the combustion is. The RCA (Residual Carbon Analyzer) measures the percentage of residual coal online, which preferably is around 4% in order to be utilized as filler in asphalt and cement.

Several power plants prefer to extract a representative sample of fly ash from the process stream, that is tested in a laboratory. This sampling is done by M&W’s instruments FAS (Fly Ash Sampler) and/or ADS (Automatic Dust Sampler).
